Charity Hospice Services
These basic hospice services are available to all eligible patients,
regardless of insurance coverage or the ability to pay:
Nursing: Nursing services to evaluate the patient's needs and to assist and instruct the caregivers in appropriate patient care. The patient’s “Primary Nurse” serves as the patient’s Case Manger, working with the physician and the other members of the Hospice team to coordinate all aspects of patient care. Continuous nursing care is provided only during periods of extreme crisis.
Certified Nursing Assistant: Certified Nursing Assistant services providing personal care to patients. CNA’s are available to provide assistance with personal care and light household assistance in the patient’s immediate area (such as changing bed linens, etc.).
Medical Social Work: Licensed Social Workers will work with patients and their families to assist them in coping with social, financial and emotional changes which occur with terminal illnesses. They will also provide assistance with other community resources for social, legal and/or financial assistance.
Dietary Counseling: If needed, registered Dietitians are contracted by the hospice to provide guidance if necessary for patients as their dietary needs and functions change.
Pastoral Services: The family’s own clergy may be invited to participate in the care given by the hospice team at the patient’s/family’s request. The hospice also has spiritual care representatives who are a part of the hospice team and who will visit patients and families at their request.
Volunteer Services: Trained volunteers are a valuable part of the hospice team. They provide support to the patient, family and other hospice team members. Click here for more information.
Physical, Occupational, & Speech Therapy: If needed, therapists are contracted by the hospice to provide services if they may improve the quality of life for the patient.
Bereavement Services: Bereavement services provided to patients and families from time of admission
and up to one year after the patient's death. A Bereavement Coordinator and specially trained bereavement volunteers are available. Bereavement Support Groups are held by Dana Campbell at Prime Time on Lovers Lane in Steubenville at noon. And Dana also conducts an evening support group at Crossroads Christian Church in Wintersville. And a popular favorite is the Bereavement Luncheon which Dana holds monthly at Scaffidi's Restaurant in Steubenville at 1:00. The dates for all three events are always posted on our home page. These luncheons are open to the community and often feature a guest speaker. Lunch is paid on your own and notification of the place will be posted if changed. One of the several ways we chose to remember those whom we have served, or those whom people in our community have lost is through our Summer Lantern Release. The Release was held for the first time last year in 2014 at Friendship Park in Smithfield at dusk. The event was a huge success and this will be a continuing event. All in our community are welcome to take place in this event. And another way of remembering those we have lost is our largest fundraiser which is the Annual Christmas Poinsettia Tree which is at the Fort Steuben Mall . This tree is usually displayed from Thanksgiving weekend till after Christmas. Any donation is acceptable and a name card will be placed on the poinsettia by our staff. Memorial events are very effective and beautiful ways for us to remember those who have gone forth to their Eternal Home. We invite anyone to participate. The pictures below are of past memorial events and the families who participated in our Spring Butterfly Release and our Fall Balloon Release. Thank you to all who came out to remember their loved ones!
Pain and Symptom Management: Pain and Symptom Management with the goal of controlling pain and symptoms of the patient in his or her own environment with the least amount of loss of mental alertness possible. Hospice will provide the latest techniques and medications to either eliminate or at least control physical symptoms to keep the patient comfortable and alert. Pain consultations alone may be conducted by Physician order - even if a patient is still not ready for hospice care. Our RN 's are more than willing to evaluate your loved one and offer appropriate pain medication regimes to the Physician if your Doctor will only give the necessary order.
Additional Services
These additional hospice services are available to hospice patients under the Medicare Hospice Benefit, Medicaid, and most private insurance plans. If these services are not covered by your insurance, Charity Hospice will do their best to assist you in finding alternative ways to meet your needs.
Short Term Inpatient Care Services: Patients may be admitted to a contracted facility for short periods of time in the event of acute symptom control or for caregiver respite. Inpatient care is not provided for curative treatment of the terminal illness.
Medications & Supplies: Directly related to the terminal illness, including chux, adult incontinent supplies, gloves, dressing supplies. All medications to assist with patient comfort and palliative care, including pain medications, anti-nausea, anti-anxiety agents, etc.
Durable Medical Equipment: All durable medical equipment, such as oxygen, hospital beds, wheelchairs, walkers, etc. are provided under the hospice benefit.
No job is too big or too small for the hospice team.
It helps in every way it can.
This may include:
Pain relief through medication
Back rubs and foot massages
Matters of personal cleanliness and coordination of necessary medical equipment
“Being there” to let the patient know he or she is not alone
Talking openly about feelings
Assisting with household chores and helping to put financial matters in order
Providing favorite foods or music
Joining in favorite pastimes
Though hospice professionals and volunteers are there to help, they encourage patients to be as active and to do as much for themselves as possible.
